In a nail biting 120 minutes of football, Benni McCarthy’s ‘Cape Town City FC’ has clinched the MTN8 Cup, a first for the young club.
The score remained goalless, forcing the City and its competitor, Supersport United, into a penalty shootout.
City went on to win the shootout with Thabo Nodada scoring the final goal that would clinch the title.
Riyaad Norodien scored the first goal for City, followed by Roland Putsche and Siphelele Mthembu.
Benni had special praise for his goalkeeper, Peter Leeuwenburgh, who had made two crucial saves that would put Supersport’s ambitions on hold.
Man of the match and City Defender, Edmilson Dove, says that “it’s not easy out there being a defender but we fought for each other” and “we were willing to die out there”.
Of his team, Benni joked that they are going to give him a heart attack but they deserved the win.
“They were brilliant,” said Benni.
