Final Voter Registration Week, Possible Election Date Announced

The Electoral Commission has announced today the final voter registration weekend for the 2019 national and provincial elections.

The 22 932 voting stations across the country will open from 08h00 to 17h00 on Saturday 26 January and Sunday 27 January 2019.

This is to allow new voters to register and existing voters to update and to check their registration details.

Although no final date has been set for the elections, the Commission indicated that it might take place on May 8, 15, 22, or 29.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the final date in February 2019.

What do you need to know about registration and the elections?

There are currently 26.1 million registered voters who will vote for the president of the country (National) and the Premier for each province (Provincial).

In order to register, you must be a South Africa citizen aged 16 and older, and in possession of an official ID document.

However, in order to vote, you must be at least 18 on the day of the elections.

When registering, you should take a copy of your bar-coded ID book, smart card ID or temporary ID certificate to a registration point in the voting district where you live.

You will need to provide an address of residence, but proof of address is not required.

If you live abroad, a registration weekend is also being planned at South Africa’s 120 High Commissions, embassies and consulates.

If you are a registered voter, you can visit the Electoral Commission website (www.elections.org.za) to check your current registration details and voting station location.

You can also SMS your ID number to 32810 to receive an SMS containing the address of your voting station (charged at R1).

You can also update your address at www.elections.org.za/MyIEC.

If you are not registered and not sure where to register, go to http://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/  to find your correct voting station or call the Contact Centre.
