It was announced today that Bafana’s second highest goal scorer, Shaun Bartlett, has been included on its coaching staff.
However, Bafana’s Head Coach, Stuart Baxter indicated that the position is not permanent and will only be on a “game-by-game basis”.
“This will give us a chance at first to see if he likes us and if we in turn like him,” said Coach Baxter.
With 29 goals in 74 appearances for Bafana, the Factreton born and raised Shaun’s goal record is only second to Benni McCarthy’s.
Starting his professional football career in 1992, he has played for Cape Town Spurs, the Colorado Rapids, MetroStars, FC Zürich, Charlton Athletic, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic.
During his time in the Premier League for Charlton Athletic, he scored the 2000/2001 ‘Goal of the Season’ for his volley against Leicester City.
After his retirement as a player, he became an assistant manager for the Golden Arrows before moving on to manage University of Pretoria F.C.
The footballing genes do not just stop with Shaun however.
Last year, his son, Tyrique, joined Newcastle United’s Academy and has been training with the senior team.
Shaun and his wife, Juanita, is also the parents of Alonso and Cameron.
