Dr Lisa Augustine had worked a long day at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and was on her way home after 10pm. She stopped at a red traffic light outside one of the hospital’s entrances when two men appeared at the window and demanded her cellphone. They told her that she should hand over her cellphone or they would shoot her. She noticed that one of the guys looked uneasy so she looked him straight in the eye and told him kindly that she is too tired to be robbed after working whole day to help the community. The robber suddenly softened up and apologized. She gave him a R40 and he ran off. She says she is sure he is not a bad person and he is probably just very desperate. It was only when she drove off that she realized what had just happened and what might have happened.
Lisa studied medicine at Wits University, graduating in 2014 and specializes in Orthopedics. Orthopedic surgeons focus on injuries and diseases of your body’s musculoskeletal system. Her family is originally from East London in the Eastern Cape.
