Keenan Koopman has always dreamed of becoming a football player and now, at the age of 16, his dream may be coming true.
Hanover Park’s Keenan has been awarded a football and academic scholarship at Berkshire School. Berkshire, which is located in the state of Massachusetts, is one of the top private schools in the US and the school is just a 2 hour drive away from New York City.
Keenan currently plays soccer for the Ubuntu Fish Hoek under 18 side and was 1 of the 3 players from Ubuntu to be selected by the Black Rock FC Scholarship program in the US. The Black Rock Program seeks to identify top student-athletes from around the world and place them at the top boarding schools throughout the United States. Candidates for the scholarship are assessed on their academic and footballing performance and Keenan made it through all the assessments. This basically tells us that not only does he have skills on the football field, but he is also takes his schoolwork seriously. It comes as no surprise, since he has parents that have sacrificed to give him the best education possible.
Keenan says that his biggest role model is his dad, Theodore. He says that Theodore instilled discipline in him at an early age, always encouraging him to work hard and to persevere to get him where he wants to be. His favorite subjects are Business Studies and especially Life Sciences. He wants to study Biokinetics, a field that combines his love of football and the study of the human body.
Despite being awarded with a scholarship, Keenan needs our support. As great as the opportunity is, the key challenges his family faces is meeting the financial demands associated with the opportunity. The scholarship covers everything except for the cost of airfare. The amount of R18 000 is still needed to pay for his airfare and other extra costs.
Keenan is leaving on the 31st of August 2018, so if you want to help him fly the South African flag high, you can reach his dad at 0614916774 or 0788631010 and via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you’d like to make a donation, visit the link by clicking HERE.
