Born in Heidelberg, Jo-Ann de Wet is currently the Senior Director of Operations at McDonalds. Her career at McDonalds started when she applied to be a trainee manager. She was accepted and had to do a 3 month training programme overseas. At the time, she was already married with a three month old baby, but McDonalds also paid for herfamily to visit her. When she started work as a trainee manager, her duties included washing windows and cleaning the restaurants. She worked hard and after years of climbing the corporate ladder, she was promoted to the position of Senior Director of Operations.
Jo-Ann completed her schooling at Kensington High and it is here that her teachers encouraged her to apply for a bursary and study for a business science degree at the University of the Western Cape. She was a very hard working student which is why she received a full bursary to pay for her studies.
Jo-Ann says that in order to be successful, you have to be clear about what you want to achieve and you should not give up when you are filled with self-doubt. Surround yourself with positive people who will motivate you. She says that when she was filled with fear and self-doubt, the support from her family kept her going. She is especially grateful for the support of her husband and four sons.
The advice she gives to young people is that they are the only ones that can decide their future and destiny. They must never forget their roots and always remember to love and respect those that stood by them and made them who they are. Her motto is: ‘It does not matter where you came from, but what you achieve’.
