While studying to become a dentist, Dr. Joseph Joshua made a promise to himself that he would give back to the community he grew up in. Despite working in the Netherlands, he kept that promise and returns home every year to Saldanha Bay where he hosts a free dental clinic.
The former Diazville Senior Secondary pupil is a true product of the fishing community he grew up in. His father was a fisherman and he received a bursary from the Sea Harvest Foundation. After completing his dentistry degree at Stellenbosch in 2002, Dr. Joshua started his dental career in Somerset West but he had always dreamt big. After two years of working in South Africa, he moved to the Netherlands where he has been working for the past 12 years and is the owner of two dental practices.
Dr. Joshua started doing the free dental clinic in Saldanha Bay four years ago and as always, he dreamt big. He wants to help as many people as possible and he now also gives free dental clinics in Paternoster, Vredenburg, St. Helen Bay, Laaiplek and Langebaan.
To give you an idea of how busy Dr. Joshua is during his time in South Africa, in just seven days last year, he extracted over 4000 teeth in addition to completing several fillings and oral cleansings. His proud mother, Cynthia, advises people to be patient when they visit his clinic. He has to help thousands of people in a short space of time and she tells people that they should bring a book or some needlework.
Dr Joshua will be returning to South Africa to do his fifth free dental clinic in August of this year. If you are interested in seeing him, please check out his facebook page which contains information about all the places and dates.
